Fujitsu Partners with General DataComm to Deliver Broadband Solutions to High-Growth Market

MIDDLEBURY, CT, and ANAHEIM, CA, July 31, 2000-General DataComm Industries, Inc. [NYSE: GDC] and Fujitsu Business Communication Systems, Inc. announced today that Fujitsu has selected GDC's award-winning broadband switches and advanced multimedia systems to provide integrated voice, video, and data solutions to a burgeoning market.

Fujitsu will integrate the GDC APEX™ ATM family of switches with its SONET (Synchronous Optical Network) product line, EA family of ATM switches, and F9600™ Enterprise Voice product portfolio, offering customers the economical benefits of voice and data convergence.

ATM's versatility and rich interfaces make it the technology of choice for voice and data network integration. Its proven Quality of Service (QoS) capability enables high-availability voice in the integrated network model. Recognized for its flexibility and bandwidth optimization, ATM is a natural complement to SONET technology.

GDC's leading-edge multiservice products, coupled with Fujitsu's highly reliable data and voice technology, strengthen Fujitsu's systems integration position as a single-source provider of equipment and services to its markets. Fujitsu will offer these new solutions to key U.S. enterprise, utility, transportation, and government markets.

GDC and Fujitsu have a proven track record providing ATM-over-SONET solutions to Petroleum Communications, Inc. (PetroCom™), a leading cellular and satellite service provider for the Gulf of Mexico.

"We are pleased that Fujitsu has selected GDC to competitively position itself in the ATM-over-SONET marketplace. This is testimony to the high quality and reliability of our product line," said Keith Mumford, vice president and general manager for GDC's Broadband Division. "This partnership brings GDC's leading-edge technologies to Fujitsu's existing and prospective clients reaching a new sector of the U.S. market."

For 2001 the Yankee Group has forecasted a $3.5 billion ATM WAN market worldwide and expects this market to grow considerably through 2003.

"By adding the GDC APEX product family to our portfolio, we enhance our ability to provide packet-based business solutions. GDC's products give us a robust set of features, enabling efficient bandwidth utilization in our scalable multi-vendor designs," said Mohammad Raza, vice president of product marketing for Fujitsu Business Communication Systems. "Customers are demanding ATM-over-SONET technology, coupled with the knowledge and experience to incorporate it reliably into their networks."

Key features of the GDC APEX family include:

  • Concurrent support for multiple services including voice, data, and video;
  • Cost-effective, leading-edge AAL2 Voice-over-ATM;
  • Integral multimedia interfaces, including MPEG-2 video capabilities;
  • Frame Relay switching over ATM;
  • Circuit emulation to protect existing investments; and
  • Native LAN interconnection and concentration.

GDC's ProSphere® network management application suite configures, monitors, and secures access to the GDC APEX ATM switches, enabling the most efficient and economically beneficial uses of the ATM-over-SONET environment.
